World tourism day
[edit] Introduction
World Tourism Day (WTD) is organised by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO or UNWTO) and has been held on 27 September each year since 1980. It was at its third session (Torremolinos, Spain, September 1979), that the UNWTO General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day, commencing in 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970.
The timing of World Tourism Day is particularly appropriate in that it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere. Whilst tourism may not be considered initially as directly related to the design of buildings, it is actually a key industry that impacts not only the design of modern buildings and shapes sustainable development, from hotels to resorts to airports, ports and train stations, but tourism also bears a direct relationship and reliance on conservation in general.
Below are some of the themes from previous world tourism days to highlight the connection these have with the design, construction and preservation of buildings.
