Plumb level
A plumb level is a form of level with a plumbing attachment. It has a horizontal arm and a plumb line at right angles to the arm. This type of a plumb bob, which is a string and a heavy weight, can be used to establish a reference line that is perfectly vertical.
An introduction to recording buildings, A guide to good recording practice, published by Historic Environment Scotland on 5 November 2019, defines a plumb-bob (or plummet) as: ‘a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, that is suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference, or plumb-line.’
