Salutogenesis
TG 10 Wellbeing in Buildings, A BSRIA topic guide, written by Sorcha Redmond and published in January 20205 states: “The concept of salutogenesis, introduced by medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky in the 1970s, reflects a shift towards a more proactive and holistic view of health and wellbeing... Salutogenesis emphasises factors that promote health in the first instance rather than just treating disease retroactively. It seeks to understand the factors that contribute to health and wellbeing, such as social support, coping mechanisms, and personal resilience…. Antonovsky proposed that a strong sense of coherence, which includes comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness, contributes to a person’s ability to manage stressors, and maintain health.”
