Resources in the construction industry
A resource is a source or supply of assets that can be drawn on by a person or organisation and from which a benefit is derived.
In the construction industry resources might include:
- Human resources.
- Suppliers, contractors and consultants.
- Natural resources.
- Materials.
- Products.
- Construction plant.
- Tools.
- Equipment.
- Space.
- Facilities.
- Finance.
- Information.
NB Government Functional Standard, GovS 006: Finance, Version: 2.0, published by HM Government in September 2021 defines resource as: ‘Current expenditure such as pay or procurement and including depreciation, which is the current cost associated with the ownership of asset.’
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, gives the following, rather limited definition: ‘Resources are residential dwellings, community facilities and infrastructure such as educational and health facilities, emergency services, places of worship, sports and recreational facilities, open spaces, and public rights of way.’
PAS 2080:2023 Carbon management in buildings and infrastructure, second edition, published by The British Standards Institution in March 2023, defines resources as: ‘…something that lies ready for use or that can be drawn upon (material and non-material) for aid or to take care of a need.’
