Malware
Guide to Controls (BG 83/2023) written by John Marrow and published by BSRIA in June 2023, states: ‘Malware is malicious software which is a security threat when a file is transferred to a system through the connection of media such as a USB drive or through an email. Malware can often destroy important information, such as system applications or collect personal information from a server or PC.’
Types of malware include:
Building Services Analytics BG 75/2018, was written by Mitch Layng and published by BSRIA in September 2018. It states:
Although building services systems do not surf the web or open emails, they still need to be safeguarded against malware hiding in message payloads that could create serious problems, like sabotaging mission-critical data or causing equipment damage. It is also important to ensure malware cannot gain access to building systems through removable storage media such as USB drives, CDs, and DVDs. Also requiring security protection are personal computing devices used for connecting to building systems or the BMS via a user interface. An infected device could allow malware to infiltrate the smart building. Malware typically attacks personal devices via websites and email attachments, making it necessary to secure all devices that connect to the network, whether private or public. Most stakeholders are aware of cybersecurity risks, but when it comes to phishing attacks, the user is still the weakest link. (Phishing is a form of cyberattack in which legitimate-looking emails or texts are used to obtain private information such as bank details or passwords.)
