Setting
Conservation Principles, Policies and Guidance, For the sustainable management of the historic environment, published by Historic England in 2008, defines setting as: ‘The surroundings in which a place is experienced, its local context, embracing present and past relationships to the adjacent landscape.’
Conservation Principles, Guidance for the sustainable management of the historic environment in Northern Ireland, published by the Historic Environment Division in July 2021, defines setting as: ‘The immediate and extended environment that is part of – and contributes to – the significance and distinctive character of a heritage asset, and through which a heritage asset is understood, seen, experienced and enjoyed.’
The word setting may also refer to the position in which something is set.
