Joint Inspection Team (JIT) for Building Safety in Wales
The Joint Inspection Team (JIT) for Building Safety (Wales) Limited was incorporated on 17 October 2023 and operates under the umbrella of the Welsh Local Government Association. It is funded with support from the Welsh Government and the Welsh Local Government Association.
The JIT works in partnership with Fire and Rescue Authorities (FRA) and Local Authorities (LA) towards enhancing the safety of multi-occupied residential buildings in Wales, through inspections and assessments, offering expert guidance and support. The JIT does not have enforcement powers but through a developing programme of inspections, selected via a risk-based methodology, it will provide advice and make recommendations to existing enforcement authorities. This will include real-time reporting on issues of significant concern, detailed reports to enforcement authorities, post-inspection meetings, and reviews with the host Local Authority and relevant Fire and Rescue Service. As well as highlighting the offer of Welsh Government-funded intrusive surveys, to encourage more expressions of interest to the Building Safety Fund from building owners/managing agents.
Ther JIT summarise their activities as :
- Inspections: Conduct detailed inspections of multi-occupied residential buildings.
- Advisory Role: Provide real-time advice and detailed reports to enforcement authorities, without holding enforcement powers.
- Capacity Building: Enhance the inspection capabilities of local authorities and fire services through collaborative efforts and knowledge sharing.
- Learning and Development: Utilise inspections as learning opportunities to refine the regulatory model and improve policy outcomes.
