[edit] Introduction
The Building Owners and Managers Association International is more commonly referred to as BOMA International. It is an organisation based in the United States but with affiliate branches in other parts of the world. In the UK, its affiliate is the British Council for Offices (BCO).
BOMA International is a professional association for property owners and managers involved in the commercial real estate industry. Members also include facility managers, service providers and other allied professionals.
[edit] History
BOMA International was established in 1907. In 1920, the association published the first edition of its Experience Exchange Report. This report was originally released during a time when the growth of cities was moving at a fast pace and skyscrapers were being built rapidly in North America. It is a benchmarking tool that is still available to property management professionals in an online, subscription based format.
[edit] Professional development
In addition to the Experience Exchange Report, BOMA International produces Floor Measurement Standards and contributes to the International Property Measurement Standards (IPMS).
As part of its development of regulations and standards for the built environment, BOMA International participates in lobbying related to property management. Representatives from the organisation have testified on subjects including; electricity deregulation, water conservation, building codes, security, emergency preparedness and so on.
BOMA International offers courses in property management as well as certification programmes including the Certified Manager of Commercial Properties™ (CMCP™) designation (offered through Commercial Real Estate Certification Institute (CRECI) and Real Property Administrator (RPA), Facilities Management Administrator (FMA), Systems Maintenance Administrator (SMA) and Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT) designations (offered through BOMI International, an independent institute for property and facility management education). The organisation’s BEEP® (BOMA Energy Efficiency Program) offers courses that can be used for LEED credential maintenance.
[edit] The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Award
BOMA International sponsors The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY®) Awards which evaluates commercial buildings against criteria including; community involvement, tenant relations, site management and environmental policies and procedures. Recognising “Excellence in Building Management”, the TOBY Awards advance from local to regional level, to international level.
