Particulates
The glossary of statistical terms, published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), defines particulates as: ‘…fine liquid or solid particles, such as dust, smoke, mist, fumes or smog, found in air or emissions.’
AR5 Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, Glossary, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines particulates as: ‘Very small solid particles emitted during the combustion of fossil and biomass fuels. Particulates may consist of a wide variety of substances. Of greatest concern for health are particulates of diameter less than or equal to 10 nm, usually designated as PM10.’
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines particulate matter as: ‘Discrete particles in ambient air, with diameters ranging between nanometres (billionths of a metre) to micrometres (millionths of a metre).’
