Nitrogen dioxide
Nitrogen (N) is a nonmetal chemical element that is can be found in the form N2, as a colorless, odorless gas.
Nitrogen oxides are chemical compounds consisting only of nitrogen and oxygen which may be interconverted in the atmosphere. The principal oxides of nitrogen are nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide.
Nitrogen dioxide is a gas produced when fuels are burned and is often present in motor vehicle and boiler exhaust fumes. It is an irritant to the respiratory system.
Nitrite is an ion made up of one nitrogen and two oxygen atoms.
Nitrate is an ion made up of one nitrogen and three oxygen atoms.
Denitrification is: 'A microbial process that reduces nitrate to nitrite and then nitrite to nitrogen gas.' Ref The SuDS Manual published by CIRIA in 2015.
