Denial-of-service
Building Services Analytics BG 75/2018, was written by Mitch Layng and published by BSRIA in September 2018. It states in relation to Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks:
βAn attacker can cause a network to fail for a period of time by sending a barrage of requests and useless traffic that slows it down to the point of being unusable. A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on a network is typically carried out by multiple cybercriminals or machines. Cybercriminals create botnets by infecting a collection of computers β sometimes hundreds or thousands β with malware that gives them control of the machines, allowing them to stage their attack, as described above.β
