Responsibility matrix

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a very broad term that describes the process of creating and managing digital information about a built asset such as a building, bridge, highway or tunnel.

ISO 19650-1 Organization of information about construction works - Information management using building information modelling. Part 1: Concepts and principles, suggests that responsibilities should be set out in two forms of responsibility matrices:

• Information management activities. A template responsibility matrix is provided in Annex A of ISO 19650-2, which can be used by the appointing party to assign information management activities to themselves, an appointed party or a third party.
• Information deliverables. A responsibility matrix setting out information deliverables against information exchange stages. The level of detail will increase as the project progresses

Information protocol to support BS EN ISO 19650-2 the delivery phase of assets, published by the UK BIM Framework in association with the Construction Industry Council (CIC), Edition 1: May 2020, suggests that a Detailed Responsibility Matrix is: ‘…a Responsibility Matrix identifying what information is to be produced, when the information is to be exchanged and with whom and which Task Team is responsible for its production, as may be provided in accordance with the Information Standard.’

It defines a High Level Responsibility Matrix as: '...a Responsibility Matrix containing the allocated responsibility for each element of the Information Model and the key deliverables associated to each element, as may be identified in the Information Particulars and/or provided in accordance with the Information Standard.'
