Combustion plant
The term ‘combustion plant’ refers to any piece of equipment that involves the combustion of a fuel to generate energy. Ref The HS2 London-West Midlands Environmental Statement, published by the Department for Transport in November 2013.
Small Combustion Plant is plant with a rated thermal input less than 1 megawatt (MW).
Medium Combustion Plant (MCP) is plant with a rated thermal input of at least 1 MW but less than 50 MW. Medium combustion plants are used for a wide variety of applications, including; (electricity generation, heating and cooling, providing heat or steam for industrial processes, and so on). Emissions from MCP’s are regulated by the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD). Ref European Commission http://ec.europa.eu/environment/industry/stationary/mcp.htm
Large Combustion Plant (LCP) has a rated thermal input of at least 50 megawatts (MW). This includes plant such as fossil fuel or biomass-fired power stations and combustion in petroleum refineries. Emissions from LCPs are subject to Chapter III and Annex V of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).
