High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines mine workings as: ‘All areas where minerals have been or are being extracted underground. These can be deep or shallow underground workings and can include coal mines, limestone mines, salt mines etc.’
