Building control professional
Recommendations on the future regulation of the Building Control Sector and Profession in England, published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) on behalf of the Future of Building Control Working Group in July 2020, defines a Building Control Professional as: ‘A person working for a Building Control Body carrying out building control functions.’
In the context of the UK Building Safety Regulator, the building control profession encompasses individuals who are responsible for ensuring that construction projects comply with building regulations and standards to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of occupants and the public. Building control professionals may include building inspectors, surveyors, engineers, and other qualified professionals with expertise in construction and regulatory compliance. Their role involves reviewing building plans, inspecting construction works at various stages, and issuing approvals or certificates of compliance upon satisfactory completion. Building control professionals play a crucial role in upholding the integrity of the built environment, promoting sustainable construction practices, and mitigating risks associated with building failures or safety hazards. They work closely with architects, developers, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure that construction projects meet the necessary regulatory requirements and contribute to the overall safety and quality of buildings across the UK.
Building control inspectors had been expected to register with the Building Safety Regulator and pass through an accreditation process by 6 April 2024 however at the time of writing this has been delayed by an estimated 6 months.
